Gentlemen – What to Wear to Newcastle’s Northumberland Plate

Based in Gosforth Park, Newcastle Racecourse is one of the most popular racecourses with over 60 race days. It boasts two completely different kinds of race tracks: a floodlit all-weather straight mile track for flat racing and a turf track for jump racing. Northumberland Plate Meeting is Newcastle’s oldest, largest and most prestigious racing event in their calendar and is held over three days in June. For 2025 the dates are Thurs 26th June until Saturday 28th June.

Official Dress Code for Hospitality & Premier Enclosure

Hospitality areas and the Premier Enclosure operate a smart casual dress code. Sportswear, trainers and fancy dress are not permitted. Shirts must have a collar, though a tie is not essential. Smart jeans and tailored shorts are acceptable.

For Gentlemen We Say… Collared shirts are required, but most gentlemen who have a good idea of what to wear to Newcastle Racecourse, go all the sartorial way and wear a suit and tie.

All prices are correct at time of publishing

Most racegoers will choose the single breasted suit so stand out from the crowd with Jaeger Double Breasted Wool Linen Blend Suit from M&S The suit is ideal for both sunny warm or fresh cooler weather due its blend of 50% wool and 50% linen. In a light pistachio green shade. Total price is £400.00 (jacket £260.00, trousers £140.00)

Pair the suit with M&S Pure Cotton Striped Shirt in green stripe. The stripes are wide enough to give a louder contemporary look than the narrow classic stripe usually worn in the office. £30.00 Don’t be afraid to add a patterned tie such as M&S Pure Silk Striped Tie  in sage green with diagonal stripes. £25.00

Whether you wear a tie or not, do not forget the pocket square. This is one accessory which always adds a dashing touch with no effort at all – the only rule to remember is that if you do wear a tie, the pocket square should never exactly match. Geoff Stocker’s The Play’s The Thing pocket square references an old theatrical safety curtain and proscenium arch in pure satin silk. £45.00

Slip into comfort and style with a pair of smart soft loafers. These are ideal for the summer and easy to wear with or without socks. Suede Loafers by Autograph M&S in a cool stone shade are adorned with twin tassels. £60.00 No socks required. Also available in tan and navy.

Don’t forget the sunglasses; a must have accessory for a sunny day at the races. M&S D Frame Polarised Sunglasses have green tinted clear frames and dark green lens £18.00.

Official Dress Code for them Grandstand

There is no dress code in the Grandstand. Fancy dress is allowed in the Grandstand, providing it’s decent and would not cause offence to other guests. We say…the ladies will probably still dress up so why not join them and go for smart casual.

Linen Blend Blazer by Lands’ End combines smart single breasted tailoring with the more relaxed linen blend fabric. £150.00 and available in slate blue or toasted rye. With matching Pleated Linen/Cotton Trousers in a relaxed fit. £70.00

Add a pop of colour and flair with Simon Carter’s  silk Botanical Pocket Square  – A print of free style arrangements of flowers and butterflies in the corners contrasting with the formality of the circles of insects and flora. All on a sky blue background. £55.00

For smart casual, pair with Traditional Fit Ultimate Shirt by Lands’ End in deep sea navy fine stripe £65.00 and a pair of their Derby Shoes £75.00  This classic shoe style has been given a relaxed update in stone suede and comfortable rubber soles. Jazz up your style with colourful or patterned socks such as  SOCKSHOP Bamboo Striped Socks £8.99 for a triple pack. Bamboo is antibacterial, keeping foot odour and fungal growth at bay, and better at moisture absorption than cotton. With bamboo socks, feet stay dryer, healthier and even cooler, as bamboo-based fabric keeps an even temperature – never too warm, never too cold, definitely needed for a day at the races.

If you’re not wearing a tie, accessorise with Silver blackened necklace with dragon pendant by THOMAS SABO £125.00. Complete your cool look in GUESS® Navigator Sunglasses with gradient blue lenses £110.00
