Fighting Fifth Hurdle: One of the country’s top jump races, this Grade 1 National Hunt hurdle race is staged at the end of November at Newcastle Racecourse. This year it is on Saturday 29th November 2025. The race’s title refers to the ‘Fighting Fifth’, the nickname of the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers (formerly known as the 5th Regiment of Foot). In the year before the race’s launch, the regiment was amalgamated with three others to form the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers. The inaugural running of the race was in 1969. The Fighting Fifth is the first race in the the Triple Crown of Hurdling – to win the Triple Crown a horse must win these three races in one season:
- The Fighting Fifth Hurdle – run at Newcastle (High Gosforth Park).
- The Christmas Hurdle – run at Kempton Park
- The Champion Hurdle – run at Cheltenham (during the Cheltenham Festival).
