Early autumn brings a distinctive change to Newmarket. The lighter fabrics and brighter colours of midsummer begin to give way to richer shades and sharper tailoring.

Newmarket Racecourses keeps its guidance simple: visitors should dress to feel their best. That leaves plenty of scope for personal style, whether you favour a well-cut suit or smart separates.
To help men navigate the shift between summer and autumn dressing, Grant from Dobell has shared five tips for creating a smart and weather-ready Newmarket look.
1. Let the season lead your colour palette
Early autumn is a great time to introduce richer colour. Burgundy, forest green, chocolate brown and navy all feel seasonal without appearing too heavy, particularly when balanced with cream, stone or warm grey.
If you are not ready to leave summer behind, keep lighter trousers or a pale blue shirt and add a darker blazer, knitted tie or tan leather accessories. A navy jacket with stone chinos is a dependable combination that feels autumnal without looking wintry.
2. Make every layer feel intentional
Newmarket is an open racecourse, so even a promising forecast can feel different once the breeze picks up.
Layers are essential, but they should look like a considered part of the outfit. A navy or charcoal suit in mid-weight wool is a timeless choice, while tailored trousers, a crisp shirt and textured blazer offer a less formal alternative.
A fine knit adds warmth without too much bulk, while a lightweight overcoat or weather-resistant mac will help if temperatures fall. Make sure each layer works on its own so you can adjust throughout the day.
3. Choose shoes for the whole race day
Race days involve plenty of walking between the parade ring, grandstand and trackside, so comfort matters.

4. Use accessories to add personality
Accessories are an easy way to bring individuality to a race-day outfit. A tie is not essential, but a knitted silk or wool style can become a point of difference and works well with both suits and separates.
